Frequently asked questions

An SSL "Secure Sockets Layer" Certificate is a digital certificate that verifies the identity of your website and encrypts information sent to and from your website.

All Sectigo SSL Certificates meet the government approved AES-256 bit encryption standards required for HIPAA compliance.

Once an SSL certificate order has been placed and configured through the client area, it is submitted to the SSL Certificate Authority (CA) for processing.

At this point of time, the SSL CA will undertake the validation process to ensure it’s being rightfully issued.

The first step for SSL validation is an email is sent to webmaster@<>, with a confirmation link that is required to be clicked in order to validate the domain name.

If you have ordered a Domain Validation (DV) SSL certificate, the certificate is usually issued within 15 minutes of when the confirmation link is clicked. Organisation Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates will take longer and the CA will contact both the email address supplied in the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and the webmaster@<> email addresses.

As mentioned, Extended Validation (EV) undergo further verification – that includes verification of the domain name, organisation validation and DUNS validation. As the processing is more comprehensive, it can take up to 10 business days (where all documentation is promptly supplied by the client to the CA).

Domain Validation only requires verification that the applicant owns the domain name where they plan to use the certificate. No additional checks are required before the certificate is issued, resulting in a rapid processing time.

Organisational Validation presents a greater level of security than Domain Validation as it requires additional validation carried out by the Certificate issuer.

Extended Validation is the most comprehensive validation process and follows the same procedures as Domain and Organisation validation as well as further investigation carried out by the SSL certificate issuer.
